Professor Caterina Doglioni: Ghosts of the Universe: The Mystery of Dark Matter

Saturday, 31st October 2026 • Hebden Bridge Town Hall

If you have always been curious about particle physics but felt hesitant about diving into such a complex subject, this talk offers the perfect opportunity to explore the mysteries of the universe in an accessible way. Our speaker, Professor Caterina Doglioni, is passionate about making the fascinating world of particle physics understandable for a general audience.

What better way for the Lit & Sci to celebrate Halloween (31 October 2026) than with a talk about one of the universe’s greatest mysteries: dark matter?

Professor Caterina Doglioni

Following in the footsteps of Professor Tim O’Brien of Jodrell Bank fame – and a colleague of Caterina’s who spoke to us two years ago – Professor Doglioni will guide us through the latest discoveries about the unseen matter that makes up most of the universe.

Professor Doglioni works in the same department as Professor Brian Cox at the University of Manchester and is a leading researcher in particle physics. She is also a senior lecturer at Lund University in Sweden and collaborates with scientists around the world.

At CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory, she is part of the international team working with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, searching for evidence of dark matter and exploring the possibilities of future particle colliders.

This promises to be a fascinating evening that opens a window onto some of the deepest questions in modern science: What is the universe made of? And why is so much of it still invisible to us?
